Q:What differentiates laminate flooring from hardwood flooring?
A: While both laminate and hardwood flooring enhance your home's beauty, each has distinct advantages. Hardwood, measuring 3/8" to 3/4" thick, should only be installed above grade. Laminate flooring, however, can be installed both above and below grade and over almost any existing surface. Engineered hardwood features layers topped with a hardwood veneer, while laminate, typically 7mm to 8mm thick, consists of multiple layers for added durability. The top layer of laminate uses high-quality photography to mimic hardwood. Though hardwood is often preferred, laminate is a durable, budget-friendly option that is rapidly gaining popularity.
Q: Where is laminate flooring suitable to be installed?
A: Laminate flooring is highly versatile and can be installed in nearly any room in your home, whether above or below ground and over either wood or concrete. However, it is not advisable for moist environments such as bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches, or verandas where water exposure is prolonged. Moisture can cause the laminate core to warp or swell. For bathroom installations, certain techniques, like applying a light bead of glue to the planks' tongue in areas prone to spills, can allow for its use, provided spills are promptly mopped up and dried.
