Q:What sets laminated flooring apart from hardwood flooring?
A: Both laminate and hardwood flooring can enhance a home's aesthetics. While hardwood is often regarded as superior, laminate flooring provides several advantages. Hardwood, generally 3/8" to 3/4" thick, should only be installed above grade. Conversely, laminate flooring can be installed above or below grade and over nearly any existing surface. Engineered hardwood features multiple wood layers topped with a hardwood veneer, while laminate flooring, typically 7mm to 8mm thick, consists of multiple layers for added stability and strength. The top layer of laminate accurately mimics hardwood through high-quality photographic representations. Despite the preference for hardwood, laminate flooring is a durable, long-lasting, and affordable choice gaining popularity.
Q: Where is it suitable to install laminated flooring?
A: Laminate flooring is an incredibly versatile solution suitable for almost any room in your home, whether above or below ground and over wood or concrete. There are, however, certain locations where laminate is not advisable. Given that laminate is a wood product, it is not recommended for moist environments like bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches, or verandas, nor in areas that require wet-mopping. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the laminate core to warp or swell. In some cases, with specific installation techniques, laminate flooring can be installed in bathrooms where water does not remain on the surface for prolonged periods. For bathroom installations, it's advisable to apply a light bead of glue to the tongue of the planks in areas prone to spills, and promptly mop up and dry any spills.
