Q:What distinguishes laminated flooring from hardwood flooring?
A: While both laminate and hardwood flooring elevate home aesthetics, they offer different benefits. Hardwood, ranging from 3/8" to 3/4" in thickness, is best installed above grade. Laminate flooring, typically 7mm to 8mm thick, can be installed above or below grade and over nearly any surface. Engineered hardwood has multiple wood layers topped with a hardwood veneer, whereas laminate has several layers for enhanced stability. Its top layer mimics hardwood using high-quality photography. Though hardwood is often preferred, laminate flooring is a durable, long-lasting, and cost-effective choice growing in popularity.
Q: Where is it best to install laminate flooring?
A: Laminate flooring is highly versatile, suitable for nearly any room, whether above or below ground, and over wood or concrete. However, it is not recommended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms, washrooms, saunas, enclosed porches, or areas requiring wet-mopping, as moisture can cause the core to warp or swell. With specific installation techniques, it can be used in bathrooms where water does not remain on the surface for long. Use a light bead of glue on the plank tongues in spill-prone areas and promptly clean up spills to prevent damage.
